War band in Linux Empty War band in Linux

Post by Ron Sun Dec 19, 2010 3:32 am

Hi every one!

I got some spare hardware and plan to put together a PC to run with ubuntu. I have heard of people that have M&B running using Wine (the so called Windows emulator for linux). I wonder if it would be possible to run War band in Wine, has anybody heard of that being done?

I know nothing of linux. The only thread on taleworlds I found was this:
http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/topic,99405.0.html

At first sight it seems more trouble than it's worth.

Yeah, that thread is informative, and questions are answered quite quicky there. There are a lot of people, playing m&b that way.

Thanks for the feedback guys! That link has exactly the answer I was looking for, as it seems it is no more than an exercise to compare different systems.

Linux/Unix is really no mystery, its structure is a little more complicated than DOS/windows and you have to be good at typing lots of batch code, very tedious sometimes (the prize for open source stuff). You're right Kekn it is a lot of trouble for getting overall inferior performance. It seems that it isn´t really worth running M&B Wb on Linux if Windows i available. In any case I guess all that ppl running (as Virus points) must either hate MS, love Linux or simply can't afford Windows.

Well, according to this it runs good on wine 1.3.8:

But, anyway, why Ubuntu?

Hey Wolf,

I could also say baby but is sounds too cosy! jijijiji Embarassed

Baby_Wolf
why Ubuntu ?
I found in some forum GameSpot a good answer to your question, someone wrote:

Ubuntu is awesome because:
1. It's free
2. It comes with lots of free software, like OpenOffice, GIMP, Pidgin, ect.
3. You can make it look awesome with GNOME, Compiz Fusion, Beryl, and other desktop environments
4. It's stable
5. It's secure. You don't really need any antivirus or antispyware
6. The interface is really easy compared to other Linux distribution

If you know what you're doing, you can do pretty much anything that you can in Windows. WINE runs a lot of Windows programs and Ubuntu comes standard with many Windows equivalent programs. OpenOffice is a lot like Word, GIMP is a lot like Photoshop.

I even play games on Ubuntu through WINE. It runs every PC game I own at full speed.

You are right. You will never achieve a better performance in m&b in wine than in Windows. Perhaps, there is a chance of it happening, which equals to 1%, but it's only when you have old Windows graphics drivers, broken system/partition and so on. Which you shouldn't have had in the first place anyway.
People play m&b in wine only if: 1) *nix based OS is their primary / default one, and they don't feel like starting windows just to play m&b; or 2) if they can't afford / don't have Windows at all and don't want it being installed only for m&b exclusively.
I used to play in wine, but it made my fps alot lower, and I gave it up (after a lot of tweaking, indeed, I never give up that easily Smile I couldn't do a thing against low fps in wine, and I installed windows for m&b exclusively, because I love m&b (obviously).
You can try running it in wine without reading any tricks and tips, just run the exe with wine, and that's it. If with the same settings you achieve the comparable fps to that one in windows, then it is worth it. Otherwise, don't struggle further, just don't, I advise you.
Good luck Wink

PS: btw, there are quite a lot of programs, that run in wine better and faster (and more stable), than in Windows. 99% (if not 100%) of those programs are non-3D. DirectX in wine is just worse, than in Windows natively. IIRC, the m&b server performs better in wine, for example.

Ron, any distribution has the same things and is free. hehe Smile
I advise you to try Open SUSE and Gentoo linux. Two of my favorite distributions. They are easy to use, meinatain and update.
The only problem with linux is that it's not a main stream OS and hardware manufacturers don't make drivers for it. Thats why all that uses 3D sucks in linux.
ANyway, why not try Unix, or Solaris?? Theres open solaris for x86 and x64 based systems.
oh and ofcorse!!! there's reactOS did you hear about it???

reactOS (free windows)

Open SUSE:

Gentoo:

Free-BSD:

Also.... Looks like Ubuntu doesn't have KDE??? If so, you may reconsider, cos it would be pretty hard to install a new desktop environment for a newbie, and the Gnome 3.x is a real piece of crap Smile
Open SUSe comes with Gnome 3, KDE 3 and KDE 4, among other desktops, the only downside here is that you'll probably have internet connection troubles if you don't have router, but that is easy fixable Smile
AND... regarding ReactOS - it's a free OS based on WinNT technology, so everything runs there without a problem cos it's just compatible Smile And the OS itself weighs about 50-60 mb (just like the windows, minus all the working and not working bugs)

Thanks a lot again you guys, very instructional feedback from both of you.

Great Wolf ! That would be more than I ever expected, you play Call of Duty? I wonder if it would perform Ok in Linux! Curious about the ReactOS, seems to be cool although still an alpha, isn't it?

Please, keep me informed! Cheers!

I've kept track of progress on ReactOS over the years, it's an interesting project. It should work on your machine, 32 bit operating systems can run fine on 64 bit sytems. The performance gain of 64 bit is minimal anyway.
However, it's still alpha. The first beta release should be 0.5. Some important features are still missing, full keyboard & mouse usb support is planned for 0.4 and the directx core for 0.5. And it still doesn't support SMP (if you have a multi core cpu, you'll only be able to use one core).
They used to have a longterm roadmap, you can still find it through the wayback machine: http://web.archive.org/web/20070927194321/http://www.reactos.org/en/about_roadmap.html

OpenSUSE, really? Hmm, I hadn't pegged you for an openSUSE user Razz. Anyway, I'll save you my biased anti rpm and anti novell speech Wink

OK, i'm writing this from Ubuntu linux.. hehe Smile
The game works perfectly, except for the graphic lag.
Heres a link for the mouse and multiplayer fix:
http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php?topic=99405.0
there's a file you should copy to /usr/lib32/wine/ directory and you can do it only with root privileges. to gain it you must go into super user mode so just write "su" then submit the root password. On Ubuntu you must write "sudo -i".
then:
cp /home/[user name]/Downloads/dinput.dll.so /usr/lib32/wine/
note that if you use 32 bit linux lib32 is simply "lib"

then type "logout" to exit SU mod and type "winetricks"
this will bring you GUI with the packets you can download for wine. Mark "d3d9" and press "close"
And you are ready to roll.
